A Missing Piece

i have been waiting a long time to be able to write this post, because that means that the "missing piece" is no longer missing. in my christmas post, i talked about how my family and i had a tough christmas and that i would post an explanation for why that was in a couple of weeks. well, here is the explanation.

my dad was deployed with the u.s. air force to the middle east this past july. it was a 6 month deployment. he missed a lot in 6 months...

i got engaged...this day was the happiest of my life. my mom was able to be there, which was awesome. but i would have given anything to be able to get a hug from my dad. the man who taught me how a father and husband should be, how to love, and how to be loved. i've heard before that a father is a daughter's first love. my dad was my first love. at such a significant moment in my life, a moment that was a result of all that my dad taught me about love, i wish he could have been there in person.

holidays...my dad was gone for both thanksgiving and christmas. it wasn't the same without him. it was so obvious that a piece of our family was missing. thanksgiving and christmas both felt like ordinary days, only we knew they weren't supposed to be ordinary, so it was heartbreaking.

bumps and bruises...while my dad was away, my brother was hit in the head during batting practice by an oncoming ball. i didn't realize it at the time, but after talking about it more with my mom and other family members i learned that my brother could have died. my dad is a radiologist and reads patients' films with the exact injury my brother had all the time. he knew from experience that my brother was going to need surgery to reduce the bleeding in his brain. in the end, andrew didn't need surgery and is playing in his first baseball tournament, since his injury, tomorrow!
i firmly believe that heavenly father was watching over my brother. he knew my family needed a miracle. my dad was deployed, i was away at school, and my mom was alone to deal with andrew's potentially fatal injury. we are lucky to have extended family live close by and they stepped up to help my mom.
and through the power of a priesthood blessing, andrew was okay.

when i wrote about how sad christmas was for my family, my cute blog friend courtney commented that she hoped it turned out to be a blessing.

it sure has.

my family has been tested and tried during my dad's deployment. it was really hard, but we have been spiritually strengthened and given a better appreciation for the blessing of being an eternal family.

and we are finally complete.

23// The Jordan Year

pocket of blossoms: 23// the jordan year

last year, i had only known isaac for 8 days on his birthday so throwing him a huge party would have been a little creepy. but this year i had known him for 373 days!! so that's way less creepy.

i don't think i've ever been so excited to celebrate someone's birthday! i couldn't wait to give him his presents. he kept asking me if he could open just one present on the day of his birthday party because he was just so impatient! i almost let him because i was impatient too! but i wanted him to open them on his real birthday. so i made him wait.

pocket of blossoms: 23// the jordan year

the sunday night before his birthday i threw him a mini birhtday party with some of our friends! his request: funfetti birthday cake with funfetti vanilla frosting. yes, he turned 23 not 13. i personally prefer the all-american fudge cake from costco, but hey it was his birthday so i let it slide! and it was actually really yummy! funfetti is a crowd pleaser apparently. i also made my andes mint cookies. those things with milk...sparks fly in your mouth.

pocket of blossoms: 23// the jordan year

^^see that black "x" on the yellow balloon in the background?? yeah that's there because when i picked out that balloon at the party store i thought it just said "happy birthday." but when the lady blew up the balloon it apparently said "birthday girl" as well. soooooo we just crossed out the "girl" to make it say "birthday" hahahaha.

also the balloons are tied to a tennis racket. explanation: when the balloons were in the backseat of my car they kept blocking my view out the back window, so isaac finally tied them to a tennis racket and they were nice little balloons and stayed out of my way!

pocket of blossoms: 23// the jordan year

on isaac's actual birthday, we went to dinner at texas roadhouse. anyone ever had their rolls with cinnamon butter?? i'm sure you have, you haven't lived until you've had texas roadhouse rolls with cinnamon butter...

i let him open his present while we were waiting for our meal. i had put his present inside of a vase and then wrapped the vase to throw him off. inside the vase i put his tickets to the san antonio spurs vs. utah jazz game! he was so happy when he pulled the tickets out of the vase! seeing him so excited made me so happy! the game is in february, so we have to wait a long time to go, but it's something to look forward to and we are counting the days!

after we left texas roadhouse, we went to yogurtland

our first date was...

last year...

on his birthday...

at yogurtland.

so you can see why we went :)

it was fun to reminisce about our first date, what we talked about, what was going through our minds, and how far we've come since that night. man, i love him.

i had the best time celebrating isaac's birthday with him. happy 23rd birthday to the love of my life! he said since it's his "jordan year" that it's going to be a good year. i think it will be a good year too :)

p.s. i got a gopro for christmas so we had fun playing with it at yogurtland. we looked like dorks using a gopro at a frozen yogurt place!

The Puppy Barn

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

warning: side effects of this post include squealing, "awww"s, and passing out from shock of puppy cuteness

my roommate marissa told me about the puppy barn a week ago and as soon as i heard about it i knew i had to take isaac! he might be embarrassed that i'm saying this...buuuuuuttt...he is the puppy lover in this relationship. i love puppies. but isaac...he loves puppies.

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

the puppy barn is a pet store, but instead of the puppies behind glass or in crates, they are in open tubs. so you can pick them up, pet them, and play with them! it's like rent-a-puppy (you utah people know what i'm talking about) but free!

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

i told isaac that i had a surprise for him and so when siri said "your destination will be on the right in 0.25 miles," he pressed his face up against the window and watched the right side of the street like his life depended on it.

"arrived."

isaac started busting up laughing! he was almost crying because he was laughing so hard. he couldn't believe my surprise was to take him to the puppy barn because that's something that guys are supposed to take their girls to, not girls take their guys hahaha. but secretly he knew this was the perfect surprise for him!

and he absolutely loved it.

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

^^^ i mean, look at that smile.

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

^^^ we thought this one looked like a little bear, so cute!

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

^^^ how cute are those two???

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

at one point isaac handed me the puppy and said, "can you hold her for a second? i'm going to go get my wallet." i had to grab his arm to stop him from buying a puppy! and i reminded him that his apartment doesn't allow for pets. and neither does his schedule. haha!

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

^^^ those paws, those crossed legs, that belly, that fuzzy fur, those eyes. how could you not love her!?

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

^^^ she was so fun to play with! i would put her down and run away and she would chase me. she had the cutest lopsided run!

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

^^^ this little girl had a wee bit of a lazy eye, but it was endearing hahahaha

pocket of blossoms: puppy barn

isaac insisted that this puppy's name was sandy. yes, this black lab...not the golden one. i don't try to understand.

can you tell i like chocolate??? first andes mint cookies, now oreo cake balls! (also, all-american fudge cake from costco for my birthday every single year. every single year.)

Save The Date

pocket of blossoms: save the date

...the beginning of...

endless sleepovers with my best friend,
smoochin' his cheeks right when i wake up,
having a valentine every valentine's day,
snuggling in bed on sunday mornings,
creating our own holiday traditions,
being a "mrs.,"
overcoming together,
a team,
an adventure,

and

...the day when...

i get to marry the love of my life.

Christmas Snapshots Part 2

pocket of blossoms: christmas snapshots

this is our dog mandy! she is 9 years old, so she's getting up there in dog years. my siblings always have to be reminded to take her on a walk, and, believe me, she needs the exercise! the vet always lets us know she's a little overweight when she goes in for her little doggy check-up haha.

when my mom wants my siblings to take mandy on a walk she says,
"do you guys want to take mandy on a walk before she dies?!"

brutally honest. hahaha they always end up taking her out!
so we decided to take mandy on a walk before mom could even ask! muahaha.
